White People Like Film Festivals

Monday, April 13th, 2009

In the irreverent and snarky New York Times bestseller about demographics, “Stuff White People Like” by Christian Lander, outlines the top 7 facts leading to why white people like film festivals.

  1. “90 percent of white people have taken a film class”
  2. It is a way to feel smart that is easier and less time consuming than reading a book.
  3. Travel for a reason is favored.
  4. “75 percent of white people believe they have the potential to or will become filmmakers/screenwriters/directors at some point.”
  5. Being well-versed in indie films provides an opportunity to rebel against the mainstream.
  6. “It is required by white-person law that you publicly declare foreign cinema to be better than Hollywood movies.”
  7. You can earn cinema cred by knowing foreign films from obscure countries.

Lander’s top film festivals are Sundance, Toronto and obviously Cannes.

Here in Colorado we are lucky enough to have a lot of independent filmmakers and cinima-enthusiasts. The Telluride film festival is Colorado’s largest showcase of indie films.

We at Unleaded Productions (www.denvervideo.com) support the creative mind.  Michael Anderson, producer at Unleaded Productions, is assistant art director and production manager at the Telluride film festival for the last six years. As Anderson  counts down to this year’s film festival (only 146 more days!), he has been attending other Colorado festivals.  Check this out:

on the Westword website. Anderson shot the Taste of Vail, the nation’s premiere spring food and wine festival, for Westword’s Publisher Patty Calhoun.
